Graham Competition
Description
The Schulich School of Music at McGill University is proud to announce the five finalists for the third edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers (GSC).
The finalists, selected from over 60 applicants, stand out for their backgrounds and creativity:
- Francis Battah explores jazz in contemporary music, microtonality, and an “imaginary folklore” centered on melody and modality. A multiple award-winner, he has received support from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
- Kai Kubota-Enright, a Los Angeles-based composer originally from Vancouver, draws inspiration from the interactions between sound and environment to create works that evoke personal memories. She has been honored with prestigious awards, including the 2022 ROSL Composition Prize.
- Chris LaRosa, a former arranger for the U.S. Army’s “Pershing’s Own” band, is known for his globally performed works and innovative collaborations, such as an arrangement for the gala of the 2024 World Figure Skating Championships.
- Philippe Macnab-Séguin, a recipient of over 20 composition awards, focuses on auditory sonology to analyze music as it is heard. His work is supported by organizations such as SSHRC and FRQSC.
- Christina Volpini, acclaimed for her “nuanced” soundscapes, has collaborated with prestigious ensembles including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Jumblies Theatre.
Established in 2017, the GSC supports the creation of new Canadian chamber music works by promising young composers. The competition facilitates the creation of chamber music works, including piano ensembles, with the potential to captivate diverse audiences and become an integral part of the repertoire.
Key Dates Leading to the Final Gala Concert:
• Application Deadline: August 15, 2024
• Finalist Selection: December 19, 2024
• Submission of Commissioned Works: March 16, 2025

For the 2025 edition, finalists will each compose an original work for a chamber ensemble (C flute, B-flat clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and vibraphone). The GSC has engaged Ensemble Paramirabo to perform the finalists’ works at the gala concert, where each composer will be eligible for cash prizes ranging from $6,000 to $18,000, along with an additional $6,000 Audience Choice Award
The jury comprises two Canadian composers, one international composer, a distinguished figure from the music world, a renowned performer, and a music enthusiast with a passion for new creations.
The third edition of the GSC is presented in collaboration with Le Vivier and organized by GSC.
