Julie Delisle

Biography

Julie Delisle is a composer, a multidisciplinary researcher specialized in digital audio and a flutist. They graduated from the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg (Germany) and from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, where they earned a Prix with Great Distinction.

In search for answers to their numerous questions about playing techniques and the way their musical instruments work, Julie Delisle studied acoustics, computer music and musicology at Université de Montréal. Doing research on instrumental timbre from a diversity of perspectives (instrumental, historical, perceptual, and computational) profoundly transformed their approach and their way of listening, modulating, and arranging sounds, and continues to influence their artistic processes, which are also coloured by their interest for Chinese martial arts and computer science.

Julie Delisle has completed a Ph.D. in musicology at Université de Montréal and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Music Perception and Cognition Laboratory (Schulich School of Music, McGill University). They are a collaborator in the Sheng! project (Collegium Musicae, Sorbonne Université), dedicated to the study of Asian mouth organs, and is part of the scientific committee of the online series Analyses at IRCAM, which aim is to document the mixed music repertoire.

They are currently active in the gaming and interactive audio technology world, as well as interested in the development of augmented and virtual reality. Their piece Pipa Aura Suichi (2023) has won the Vivier InterUniversitaire Prize at the first edition of the Totem Electroacoustic Competition, and the 1st Prize at the Jeu de Temps / Time Play (JTTP) competition in 2023.
