Description
Heartbeat, pulse rhythm… A vital element if ever there was one, pulsation courses through this dreamlike program born from the encounter between Thierry Pécou and his Ensemble Variances with the Montreal-based Ensemble Paramirabo. The highlight of the evening is Pulse, a recent, gentle and hypnotic score by American composer Steve Reich. In tribute to this great master of the repetitive music movement, Thierry Pécou presents Byar, a piece directly inspired by the gamelan, an Indonesian percussion orchestra. In resonance, Missy Mazzoli and Cassandra Miller unfold meditative lines.
This concert marks the second year of Thierry Pécou’s residency at the théâtre de Caen. After delving into Navajo culture in the opera Nahasdzáán, the composer and pianist went on to create the score for O Future, a théâtre de Caen production premiered last June, performed by La Maîtrise de Caen and the San Francisco Girls Chorus. As in his previous programs, Pulse reflects the musician’s recurring themes: a passion for dialogue with other cultures and a desire to link music to contemporary issues, notably climate change and biodiversity loss.
Coproduction: Ensemble Variances; Ensemble Paramirabo. With the support of the Centre national de la musique, Sacem, Spedidam, and Odia Normandie / Office de diffusion et d’information artistique de Normandie. Thierry Pécou is in residence at the théâtre de Caen as part of the composer-in-residence program for multidisciplinary venues, supported by the Ministère de la Culture and Sacem.
