Kōrihirihi

Kōrihirihi (2026) – Andrea Young
for violin, cello, flute, Bb bass clarinet, percussion, piano and live electronics

Commissioned by Ensemble Paramirabo, Kōrihirihi takes its title from a Māori word referring to the singing and chattering of birds, especially for the moment when they gather together. This new work brings together different elements of open notation – aleatoric and improvisatory score writing – alongside fleeting passages of tightly metered “bird jazz”. Live electronics capture and transform the ensemble’s sound into shifting sonic eddies and rhythmic relays, creating a fluid interplay between individual gestures, collective textures, and brief moments of convergence.
