A Moment or Two of Panic (2022)
for voice, violin, ondes martenot, trombone (arranged for Bb bass clarinet), percussion
Commissioned by No Hay Banda, A Moment or Two of Panic draws on excerpts from three poems by Donato Mancini, each structured around a different form of deixis; time in “day out, born old” (from Same Diff, 2017), place in “Indexical Signature” (from Loitersack, 2014), and person in “Who goes there?” (commissioned for this piece, 2021). These texts are assembled from diverse found sources, including turn-of-the-century travel writing, and shape a language of shifting temporal, spatial, and personal references. Reworking turn-of-the-century musical fragments, Working with fragments of turn-of-the-century materials, the music reshapes them into a structure formed from three interlocking musical grammars. The ensemble moves through a sense of drift and disorientation—caught between the cogs of time, place, and person.
